Have you received a message on WhatsApp stating that Reliance Jio is offering a free recharge or Rs 498? Don’t believe it yet because it turns out that the message is a hoax. A message claiming that Reliance Jio has announced a free recharge due to the coronavirus has made its way to many social media platforms including WhatsApp.
The message further claims the prepaid plan offers unlimited voice calls and unlimited 4G data. It also says that the plan will be valid for March 31 but to avail the offer, subscribers have to click on the link that is attached to the message.
"Jio 498 , https://jionewoffer.online.. : 31 March !", the message read. (Jio, in this difficult situation is providing a free recharge of Rs 498 for its Indian users. To avail this offer, click on the link belowPlease note that the offer is valid only till March 31).
However, it turns out that it was just another gimmick by spammers to lure people. If you click on the link, you might unknowingly expose your phone or computer to malware. So before clicking on any such link please check the source twice because it might leak your credentials and personal information.
A lot of fake news about coronavirus is being shared on social media apps such as Facebook, Twitter, and even WhatsApp.The messages have led to panicky situations and have caused mass hysteria.
In a bid to curb misinformation, Twitter said that it will remove tweets that claim of fake treatments of coronavirus or any tweet that tries to mislead users about coronavirus. Earlier, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter and Linkedin, Youtube and Reddit had issued a joint statement announcing that they have joined forces to combat false claims and conspiracy theories on coronavirus from their platforms.
